Fes to Merzouga desert tour 3 days – itinerary:
1st day: Fes – Toudgha Gorges
The drives to and from Fes are quite long so today’s departure is scheduled for 08.00. Your driver/guide will pick you up in a comfortable air-conditioned car. The first place you will pass is Ifrane, nicknamed “the Switzerland of Morocco”, owing to the houses having sloping roofs, unusual in Morocco.
In the Middle Atlas Mountains and the cedar forest near Azrou, you can stop to watch Barbary apes. Further south, we pass many Berber villages later arriving in Midelt, known as “the apple capital”, which will be the venue for lunch.
After lunch and on reaching Er Rich, you leave the main road to go deeper into the mountains to enjoy breath-taking landscapes and beautiful Berber villages. At the end of the afternoon, you arrive at the Toudgha Gorge, which will be the venue for dinner and the night’s rest. (Please be advised that, occasionally in winter, this stretch may not be passable due to snow-fall.)
2nd day: Toudgha Gorges– Merzouga
After breakfast, there will be opportunities to walk along the river bank or around the gorges. Later on, you will again pass through many Berber villages, which will give you a close look into the daily lives of the local inhabitants of the region.
After leaving the gorges and the valley beyond it, you will arrive in Tinjdad. Along the road towards the desert, you may well wonder at the mounds of earth by the side of the road. These are the openings to the “khettarat” which are underground water channels making use of the slopes in the terrain to bring irrigation to fields lower down. You can actually descend into them for a better understanding of this clever system.
In the afternoon, after a welcoming glass of tea, a sunset camel ride leads to the Erg Chebbi dunes (250m), where the spectacle of the sunset and the expansive dunes are an awesome sight. In the evening, dinner is served and is followed by music round a campfire.
The night is spent in a spacious luxury tent with a private bathroom and plenty of space to walk about in.
3rd day: Merzouga – Fes
If you manage to rise on time, you will be rewarded by the amazing sunrise and the play of the sand dunes shadows are simply beautiful. After breakfast, you will take the camels back to the car.
North of Merzouga lie Rissani and Erfoud, where you will stop to visit the local exhibits of the locally found fossils worked into interesting artefacts and even furniture. You continue north to Er Rachidia and along the Ziz Valley, which is remarkable for its huge palm groves and famous for its date festival in November.
Crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains, we arrive in Midelt once again and stop again here for lunch. The road crosses the Ayachi Mountain and you will arrive in Fes by the end of the afternoon. Your Fes Sahara desert tour ends as your driver escorts you to your riad.
