As you know, Morocco experienced a very severe earthquake of a magnitude of 6.8 on September 8th, 2023. The epicentre was located about 70 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of Marrakech, and it was the most heavily affected city. Some historic buildings in the medina, Marrakech’s old quarter, have collapsed. But we are relieved to say that the city’s infrastructure and residents have largely remained unharmed.
However, the worst hit areas have been the villages nestled in the mountains around that epicentre in the High Atlas near Asni and Imlil. The majority of these villages are constructed from adobe, susceptible to collapse, even under the weight of heavy rain. Many have now been completely destroyed, tragically including a significant loss of life. The death toll has reached almost 3000 and the number of injured lies at over 6000. It is estimated that about 100,000 children have been affected.
Many other villages in the High Atlas in other areas have also been badly damaged and people rendered homeless. Winter is approaching and the temperatures drop drastically. Snow will start falling in the coming months.
We want to reassure all travellers that, despite the recent earthquake, Morocco still remains a captivating and welcoming destination for visitors. The earthquake’s impact, while significant in certain areas, has not disrupted the overall travel experience in Morocco.
